The historic Loughlynn, in the heart of the West Roscommon Lake District is saturated in folklore. The village is surrounded by no fewer than six lakes, including "Loch Glinne", artificial by nature, built by the Lord of the Manor as a birthday present for his wife....

Midway between Boyle and Balaghaderreen is Lough Gara. When the level of the lake was lowered some years ago, 338 Crannogs (lake dwellings) and 31 dug-out boats were found. Lough Ree is a famous coarse angling lake, seventeen miles long and the second largest lake in the Shannon system. The lake is noted for its big pike. Lough Ree produces specimen bream, tench, hybrids and rudd each year. Bags of mixed coarse fish to 100Ibs are common for a day's fishing....
